The Lawyer Referral & Information Service is sponsored by the Mexican American Bar Association of Los Angeles County. The Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS) was established in 1985 with the purpose of providing confidential, prompt and professional legal referrals.

How can the MABA LRIS help me find a lawyer?

The MABA LRIS will ask you a few basic questions like your name, phone number, and address along with information regarding your legal issue. Once they have assessed your legal issue they will be able to get you connected with an attorney who is most qualified or specializes in issues like yours. You are then responsible to attend the consultation with the referred attorney.

Do I have to pay MABA LRIS?

No, MABA LRIS is a free service.

What will the attorney I am referred to charge?

All attorney fees may be different depending on a variety of things. Before you sign any contract, make sure to carefully review it to make sure you are fully aware and understand all costs involved with your case.

Once I have met with the attorney will he/she be my representative?

No, the referred attorney is not your legal representative until you have decided to hire him/her and have signed a contract which includes his/her fees. He/she is not committed to the case until the formal contract has been signed.

What if at any time I want to drop the case?

The attorney will tell you when the case is initiated and what your options are if or when you want to drop the case. Even in the beginning stages of a case, there may have been some fees acquired, make sure you are aware of any.

What if I don’t want to keep this attorney as my representative?

You can terminate the contract with the attorney at any time. Your attorney may need representation and contract to be termination in writing. Make sure you are aware of any fees acquired.

What if I have a complaint or issue regarding my attorney?

You can file a formal complaint with the State Bar of California Attorney Complaint Hotline at 800-843-9053.
